Electronics and Communications: a Weapon for Fighting Cardiovascular Diseases frontiersin.org

In the last 50 years, there has been a clear improvement in quality of life and as a result, the number of deaths due to cardiovascular problems has decreased significantly. At the same time, breakthroughs in the field of prevention and treatment of cardiovascular problems have also been major contributors in reducing the number of deaths. On the other hand, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of mortality globally, while the majority of cardiac arrests occur at home.

Today, rapid progress in the field of wireless communications and networks raises the prospect of continuous and reliable monitoring, as well as processing of bio-signals at any time and place. At the same time the explosive growth of portable, wearable, flexible and low-cost electronic devices have fueled Internet of Things (IoT) systems that are being integrated into remote health management. The combination of conventional prevention and monitoring methods, as well as current and future technological innovation, can save lives.

This Research Topic aims to gather researchers from different scientific areas to highlight new and future trends in this interdisciplinary field. The topic highlights research that proposes new or improved CVD diagnostic devices, methodologies and algorithms. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
